AEO vs. SEO vs. GEO: What’s the Difference?
Three terms, overlapping foundations, and different ways to measure progress.
The direct answer
SEO focuses on visibility in organic search. AEO emphasizes clear answers to user questions. GEO considers representation in generated answers, including mentions and citations. These terms overlap and are not universally standardized; an engagement should define the actual work and measurements.
SEO: make useful pages discoverable
Technical accessibility, relevant content, internal links, and credible information support traditional search discovery. Search impressions, clicks, and qualified visits can help evaluate results. A page must first be understandable and accessible before other optimization work can help.
AEO: answer a specific question well
Start with a real question and a direct response. Add context, exceptions, examples, and evidence when the answer needs them. A clear process page can help a buyer understand next steps; a balanced comparison can help them evaluate options. The aim is usefulness, not an arbitrary word count or repeating an exact phrase.
GEO: understand how your brand appears
Look beyond website ranking to the generated answer itself. Does your business appear? Is the description correct? Which sources are cited? Which alternatives are mentioned? Record what you observe across a defined sample rather than treating one answer as a permanent position.
One coordinated roadmap
A service page can support all three approaches: accessible architecture for SEO, direct explanations for AEO, and accurate brand context for GEO. Google describes generative AI search optimization as part of the search experience and still SEO. Avoid buying three disconnected tactics when one coherent information strategy serves the same customer.

Choose measures that match the work
Technical fixes need implementation checks. Content needs question coverage and quality review. Visibility needs repeated observations. Business outcomes need qualified engagement and conversion data where available. Do not treat a citation increase as proof of revenue growth without supporting evidence.
