SEE THE WORK BEFORE YOU START

From a buyer’s question to a practical improvement.

Explore a worked audit example: the question, the answer, the information gap, and the next action. This entire walkthrough is fictional and illustrative—not a client result or a live platform response.

The business and buying decision

Example Home Services is a fictional contractor serving a fictional local market. It offers roof replacement and repair. The buyer wants to compare contractors for a replacement project and understand how estimates work.

  • Business facts in this scenario: replacement and repair, defined service area, written estimates.
  • Research aim: check unprompted category inclusion separately from branded factual accuracy.
  • Scope of this illustration: two questions in one hypothetical search-enabled experience. No real test has been run.
02 / SEE THE WORK BEFORE YOU START

1. Define the question and context

Unbranded example: “What should I consider when choosing a roof replacement contractor in my area?” Branded follow-up: “Does Example Home Services replace roofs, and how do estimates work?” The first explores a buying decision; the second checks a description against the scenario’s facts.

  • In a real audit, retain exact wording, platform/product shown, date and time, market, search mode, and conversation context.
  • Use fresh conversations and repeat observations where agreed. Do not select only the most favorable response.

2. Inspect the answer and any visible sources

Fictional answer excerpt: “Example Home Services handles small repairs. Contact the company to ask about other roofing work.” This invented excerpt deliberately omits replacement work. It is not attributed to ChatGPT, Google, Gemini, Perplexity, or any real company.

  • Mention: the fictional company is named.
  • Citation: no linked source is supplied in this fictional excerpt.
  • Accuracy: “handles small repairs” is incomplete relative to the scenario’s service scope.
  • Category inclusion: not established by the branded follow-up. A brand prompted by name is not evidence of unprompted discovery.

3. Separate the verified gap from the hypothesis

Verified within the fictional scenario: roof replacement is an actual service, and the example answer does not explain it. Hypothesis: vague service copy may contribute to incomplete descriptions. That hypothesis is not proof of how a model produced the answer.

  • In real work, open cited URLs when available and compare their contents with current approved facts.
  • When no citation is supplied, state that the source is unknown. Never invent a URL or claim access to a model’s internal reasoning.

4. Propose a change the business can approve

Recommended example: clarify the roof replacement service page with service area, project suitability, estimate process, and verified supporting evidence. Link it from the service hub and related repair page. Review important public profiles for consistent descriptions.

  • Illustrative before: “Quality roofing solutions for every need.”
  • Illustrative after: “Roof replacement and repair for homeowners in our stated service area. Request a written estimate covering the proposed work and project considerations.”
  • Delivery responsibility: Answer Ascent drafts the agreed content and coordinates authorized implementation; the business verifies service facts and approves material claims.
  • Do not promise financing, warranties, turnaround, credentials, or project results that the business has not verified.

5. Verify the work and retest

First confirm that the approved change is published, readable, correctly linked, and consistent with visible business facts. Then repeat the agreed question set under documented conditions. Record both favorable and unfavorable observations.

  • Report whether descriptions became more complete in the sample.
  • Keep category inclusion, mentions, and linked citations separate.
  • A change in an answer after publication does not establish that the page edit caused it.
  • This walkthrough reports no performance improvement because no real observation occurred.

What a full audit adds

A full audit expands the question sample, platform and market scope, competitor review, source inspection, and prioritized roadmap as agreed. Its value comes from a documented evidence trail and a clear plan for implementation—not a single score.
