AI Mentions, Citations, and Recommendations: What Each Metric Means

Avoid mistaking one kind of visibility for another—or for a sale.

The direct answer

A mention names your business. A citation links to a source. A recommendation suggests suitability or a choice. They can occur independently. A report needs to define what it counts, use a visible denominator, and separate those signals from visits, qualified inquiries, and sales. No single metric describes the whole buyer journey.

Count inclusion separately from occurrences

If one answer repeats your company name three times, that can be three mentions but only one answer containing the brand. For an inclusion rate, divide answers containing the brand by answers reviewed. Disclose the question set and conditions. A higher percentage from a different sample may not represent an improvement in comparable visibility.

Define the type of citation

A response might link to your website, an independent article discussing your company, or a page unrelated to the brand mention. State which type is counted. Linked citations help identify visible references, but they do not expose every input behind an answer. A citation also does not necessarily mean the system recommends the business.

Evaluate recommendation and accuracy in context

A business can be named as an example, criticized, or suggested for a particular use case. Record that context rather than labeling every appearance a recommendation. Check descriptive claims against approved business facts. Accuracy needs a clear assessment unit: evaluated claims, descriptions, or another defined sample. Unassessable claims should not quietly become correct claims.

Keep the commercial interpretation honest

Visibility can support discovery and consideration, but a mention is not a qualified lead. Review referral visits, meaningful actions, qualification criteria, and customer-reported discovery where available. Do not assign invented revenue to sampled answers. A focused diagnostic can help explain which observations matter for your situation; recurring reporting should make its formulas and limitations easy to inspect.
