What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

A practical definition of GEO—and what it changes for your business.

The direct answer

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is work aimed at improving how a business and its content are discovered, understood, and represented in AI-generated answers. It considers visibility, factual accuracy, mentions, and citations. It cannot control what an independent system says.

Start with the questions customers ask

The useful unit of research is a buyer question. “Which provider suits a multi-location business?” requires different information from “What does this service cost?” Build a question set around real decisions: fit, alternatives, tradeoffs, process, and trust. Separate branded questions from category questions so a familiar company name does not distort the baseline.

Improve the information you control

Check whether important pages can be accessed and understood. Describe what you do, whom you serve, and where you operate. Answer questions directly, then provide supporting detail. Include accurate evidence such as verified qualifications, documented methods, and useful examples. Applicable structured data should describe information already visible on the page.

Measure observations, not universal visibility

Record the platform, prompt, date, context, cited sources, and answer. A mention is different from a citation, and neither proves a customer chose you. Repeat a defined set of prompts and report the sample size. Compare like-for-like observations while acknowledging that responses can vary.

What GEO is not

It is not a secret submission mechanism, a promise of recommendations, or a replacement for strong SEO. Google explains that SEO best practices remain relevant to its generative search features. A credible engagement makes implementation and measurement explicit.

Your first step

Choose five meaningful buyer questions. Check your current answers and sources. Identify one important content gap and one accuracy issue. An AI visibility audit can expand this into a documented baseline and prioritized roadmap.
